STOP FEMALE INFANTICIDE/FOETICIDE!

                 STOP FEMALE INFANTICIDE!

Female infanticide is one of the issues that are gaining much prominence from all quarters these days. A baby girl tied in polythene bag and dumped in a public dustbin left to be torn away by wild stray dogs; an incident that took place nowhere else but in the very capital of our country.
Only education or money does not necessarily bring about a change in the mindset of the society. It is the people particularly the men or the decision makers of a family who should be sensitized.
The falling sex ratio of the country is a demographic disaster that is waiting to happen... Compared to 1991 when there were no districts having less than 800 girls per thousand boys, the census data of 2001 revealed that 16 districts are having sex ratios below 800 in the country. The Sample Registration System data also indicates that the trend is not only continuing but is actually intensifying ever since\ Medical malpractices, desire for small families coupled with strong son preference, along with the undervaluing of women in society and media is largely responsible for this phenomenon. The child sex ratio is a powerful indicator of social health of any society. The declining child sex ratio has its roots in the practice of sex selection or what is commonly understood as determining the sex of the foetus and eliminating it if found to be a female.

CAUSES FOR FEMALE FOETICIDE/INFANTICIDE:

  • OBSESSION FOR SON.
  • FEAR OF DOWRY BY MANY POOR CLASS FAMILIES.
  • GIRLS ARE CONSIDERED AS FINANCIAL OBLIGATION BY MANY PARENTS.
  • SOME OF THE MEDICAL PRACTITIONERS ALLOW TO DO SEX DETERMINATION TEST TO OBTAIN THE SEX OF THE FOETUS TO FULFILL THEIR MONEY DESIRE.
Be a change maker to transform the existing landscape of your society.

Start by raising your concern on this issue of female foeticide/infanticide.
Raise the issue  at your workplace, religious and social gatherings, speak to your family members including your children and relatives, and in political and professional arenas to collectively generate public opinion on this critical issue of sex selection. If you know of anyone indulging in it, report to Appropriate Authorities. Your vigilance will help save many girls and send out a strong message to those who err.
Each one of us can change our immediate environment by treating our daughters as equal to our sons. If each of us looks at the girl child with a changed mindset it will break the prevailing social apathy.

THE CHOICES AND OPTIONS ARE LIMITLESS.
